Dirk Martens was the first to introduce printing in Flanders. As a humanist, he dedicated himself to spreading knowledge in an inexpensive way. He was one of the first to print with loose lead letters in the then Netherlands and today's Belgium.

Valerius de Saedeleer was an Aalste painter of landscapes. He painted mainly the Leie region and the Flemish Ardennes and was one of the most important figures of the first group of the Latem School. One of the first and best known painters of the Latem School. Although he was from Aalst, he mainly painted the Leie River. His legacy is counted within symbolism.
